Chapter 8: Weight and Capacity
Check! Check!
Anu has recorded the weights of the items in her house. Check if she has recorded them correctly by putting a tick against them if they look correct.
- Iron Almirah - 40 g
- Bed - 60 kg
- Rice Bag - 5 kg
- Sofa - 30 g
- Bucket - 1 kg 800 g
- Water Bottle - 650 g
- Refrigerator - 50 g
Let Us Do
Read the scales. Write the correct weight in the space given below.
[Figure: Six weighing scales labeled a to f showing different measurements, See in your textbook]
a) ............g
b) ......kg.......g
c) ......kg.......g
d) ......kg.......g
e) ...............g
f) ...............g
Note for Teachers
The learners should be capable of reading various types of weighing scales in different settings for measuring weights of different objects. Help learners to make sense of each of the scales and make them understand how the '0' works in each scale.
Teacher's Note
When reading a weighing scale, always locate the zero mark first. This tells you where the scale starts and helps you measure correctly. If the needle points between two marks, choose the closer one.
Different Units but Same Measure
Bags are weighed on two different weighing balances. One weighing balance displays weight in kilograms and other displays weight in grams.
Match the bags that have the same weights. You can use the double number line given below.
[Figure: Two weighing balances showing 2 kg and 2000 g respectively, See in your textbook]
| Weighing Balance 1 | Weighing Balance 2 |
|---|---|
| 5 kg | 3,000 g |
| 10 kg | 6,000 g |
| 3 kg | 10,000 g |
| 6 kg | 30,000 g |
| 25 kg | 5,000 g |
| 30 kg | 25,000 g |
Notice the relationship between kg and g.
1 kg \( \times 3 \) 3 kg \( \times \)____ 8 kg ____ kg 20 kg ____ kg 30 kg
1,000 g _____ g _____ g 15,000 g _____ g 25,000 g _____ g
\( \times 1000 \)
Let Us Find
Shrenu is baking cakes for her shop. She needs 3 kg 500 g flour. Her kitchen scale measures only in grams. What should her kitchen scale show for 3 kg 500 g of flour?
3 kg = 3,000 g
3 kg 500 g = 3,500 g
What would be 2 kg 250 g flour in grams?
2 kg = 2,000 g
2 kg 250 g = 2,250 g
1. Shamim and Rehan observed someone buying sugar weighing 5 kg 50 g. They thought of the quantity in grams. How much is it?
Shamim: 5,050 g
Rehan: No, it is 5,500 g
Who do you think is right and why?
2. Complete the conversions by filling in the blanks. You can use the double number line given below on which some numbers have been marked.
1 kg 3 kg ___ kg 7 kg 8 kg ___ kg ___ kg ___ kg
1,000 g ____ g 4,000 g ____ g ____ g 10,000 g 12,000 g ____ g ____ g
- 7 kg 67 g = ___________ g
- 3 kg 300 g = ___________ g
- 8 kg 69 g = ___________ g
- 10,760 g = _____ kg ____ g
- 4,080 g = _____ kg ____ g
- 12,042 g = _____ kg ____ g
Comparison between Different Weights
1. Harpreet's family planned a picnic over the weekend. Her mother and father packed different food items to take along. The following is the list of fruits they carried.
Watermelon - 3 kg
Pineapple - 1 kg 750 g
Apples - 1 kg 250 g
Mangoes - 2 kg
[Figure: A family of four people at a picnic with fruit basket, See in your textbook]
Among the fruits they carried, which one has the
- highest weight? __________
- least weight? __________
- Arrange the items in descending order of their weight.
__________ __________ __________ __________
2. Compare the weights using <, =, > signs.
- 1 kg 600 g __________ 1,700 g
- 1 kg 600 g __________ 1 kg 60 g
- 10 kg 35 g __________ 10035 g
- 1 kg 600 g __________ 2 kg 500 g
- 5 kg 50 g __________ 4 kg 500 g
- 900 g + 7,000 g __________ 7 kg + 900 g
Teacher's Note
To compare weights in different units, convert both to the same unit first. For example, 1 kg 600 g = 1,600 g, so you can easily compare it with 1,700 g. Always convert to the smaller unit (grams) when one weight is in kg and g, and the other is only in g.
Milligram
How much weight can an ant carry?
How much does an ant weigh?
Ants weigh between 1 milligram and 5 milligrams. They can carry a lot more weight than their own weight.
[Figure: Ants carrying food on a mound, See in your textbook]
1 g = 1,000 milligram (mg)
What is a milligram?
Converting g to mg is similar to converting kg to g.
4 g = 4,000 mg
4 g 100 mg = 4,100 mg
Let Us Find
- If a sugar sachet weighs 5g, how much will it be in milligrams?
- Complete the double number line below appropriately.
1 g 5 g 12 g _____ g 25 g _____ g
1000 mg _____ mg 12,000 mg 20,000 mg _____ mg 31,000 mg
- An ornament weighs 4 g 100 mg. What will be the weight in milligrams?
- A goldsmith has made an ornament weighing 10 g 500 mg. What will its weight be in milligrams? _____________________
Note for Teachers
Discuss objects that are light and measured in milligrams (mg), like ingredients in medicine, gold ornaments, etc. Encourage the learners to explore and find similar objects around them.
Key Points
- Weight can be measured in different units: kilograms (kg), grams (g), and milligrams (mg). One kilogram equals 1,000 grams, and one gram equals 1,000 milligrams.
- To convert between units, multiply when going from larger units to smaller ones (for example, kg to g), and divide when going from smaller units to larger ones (for example, g to kg).
- When comparing weights in different units, convert them to the same unit first before deciding which is heavier or lighter.
- Weighing scales display weight by pointing to a number on their dial. The position of the needle shows the exact weight of an object.
