Roman Numerals
Roman numerals were used in ancient Rome. They use letters of the alphabet. There is no symbol for zero, and the system is not a place value system. Our own system is the Hindu-Arabic system.
| Roman | I | V | X | L | C | D | M |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hindu-Arabic | 1 | 5 | 10 | 50 | 100 | 500 | 1000 |
Rules
| Rule | Details | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A. Repetition means addition | Only I, X, C and M can be repeated; V, L and D never; no symbol more than three times | CC = 200, MMM = 3000 |
| B. A smaller symbol before a larger is subtracted | V, L, D are never subtracted. I only from V and X; X only from L and C; C only from D and M | IX = 9, XL = 40, CM = 900 |
| C. A bar over a symbol multiplies it by 1000 | V with a bar = 5000 |
Example: 3986 = MMM (3000) + CM (900) + LXXX (80) + VI (6) = MMMCMLXXXVI.
1347 = 1000 + 300 + 40 + 7 = M + CCC + XL + VII = MCCCXLVII.
