Multiplication
In 125 × 4 = 500, 125 is the multiplicand, 4 the multiplier and 500 the product.
| Property | Example |
|---|---|
| Order | 34 × 78 = 78 × 34 |
| Grouping | 23 × (14 × 25) = (23 × 14) × 25 |
| Distributive over addition | 23 × (100 + 25) = 23 × 100 + 23 × 25 |
| Multiplying by 1 | 45 × 1 = 45 |
| Multiplying by 0 | Any number × 0 = 0 |
To multiply by 10, 100 or 1000, put one, two or three zeroes on the right. Examples: 1356 × 90 = 122,040; 675 × 4000 = 2,700,000; 4 × 237 × 25 = (4 × 25) × 237 = 23,700; 5347 × 486 = 5347 × (400 + 80 + 6) = 2,598,642.
Division
Larger numbers are divided in the same way as 4-digit numbers: take the leftmost digits that make a number at least as large as the divisor, find how many times it goes, write that in the quotient, subtract, bring down the next digit and repeat. Dividend = divisor × quotient + remainder.
Example: 2950682 ÷ 35 gives quotient 84305 and remainder 7. And 3845952 ÷ 144 = 26708 packets.
