व्याख्या - मझली बहु सुन्दर और बुद्धिमान थी। घर-गृहस्थी को रीति-रिवाजों के बन्धनों में बँधकर निर्वाह करती हुई, वह जीवन व्यतीत कर रही थी। बिन्दू (अनाथ लड़की) ने आग लगाकर आत्महत्या कर ली। घर परिवार की आन्तरिक परेशानियों से ऊबकर मझली बह तीर्थ करने आ गई। दख, कष्ट जो उसने उठाए उन्हें छिपा रही थी क्योंकि वह बुद्धिमान थी। उसके घर में परिश्रमी होने से कोई कमी नहीं थी।

पति अच्छा था लेकिन जेठ का चरित्र कुछ और तरह का था। बिन्दू को मझली बहु अनाथ होने के कारण बहुत प्यार करती थी। उसकी आत्महत्या के लिए समाज जिम्मेदार था। मझली बहु इससे विरक्त हो गई। अब उसने गृहस्थी में न जाने का निश्चय कर लिया। उसे गृहस्थी में लिपटी औरत का पूर्ण परिचय मिल चुका था, जिसकी इस विरक्ति की दशा में कोई जरूरत उसने अनुभव न की।

पाठ का सार (सारण)

यह मृणाल (परिवार की मझली बहू) का लिखा पत्र है। वह सुन्दर थी और बुद्धि में तेज थी। वह छिपकर साधारण-सी कविताएँ लिखती थी जो रीति-रिवाज के बन्धनों से मुक्त होती थीं। वह बारह साल की आयु में बहू बनकर आई और शादी को पन्द्रह साल हो गए थे। अपनी नन्ही बेटी के मर जाने से वह माँ कहलाने का सुख न पा सकी थी। ससुराल के घर का माहौल रूखा और घुटन भरा था। उसे गाय-भैंस की सानी-पानी में जीवन बिताना ही पसन्द था। जेठानी की छोटी बहन माँ के मरने पर अनाथ होने पर बेहन के पास आ गई ।

लेकिन उस असुन्दर, गरीब, अनाथ लड़की के साथ रूखा व्यवहार देखकर मझली बहू (मृणाल) ने उसे अपने पास रख लिया। बिन्दू मझली बहू से बहुत प्यार करती थी। परिवार वालों को जलन होती थी। अनाथ बिन्दू पर चोरी और चेचक हो जाने के दोष लगाए गए। अन्त में एक पागल लड़के से उसकी शादी कर दी गई। बेरहम सास और पागल पति से छुटकारा पाकर बिन्दू गौशाला में आकर मझली बहू को सोती मिली। असलियत मालूम होने पर मझली बहू ने उसे प्यार दिया और ढाढ़स बंधाया लेकिन घरवालों ने उसे झूठा बताया और ससुराल वालों के दुबारा आने पर उसे फिर ससुराल भेज दिया।

मझली बहू बिन्दू को न रोक सकी। मझली बहू जगन्नाथ पुरी तीर्थ करने गई। अपने भाई शरत् को तीर्थ के लिए बिन्दू को लाने भेजा। उसने बताया कि बिन्दू ने आत्महत्या कर ली। यह सुनकर मझली बहू विरक्त हो गई और वापस अपनी गृहस्थी में नहीं लौटी। उसने मीराबाई की तरह सारे बन्धन तोड़कर अपने भरोसे विरक्त जीवन बिताने का निश्चय किया। यह था घरवालों के आश्रय से मुक्त, एक स्त्री (मृणाल) मझली बहू का पत्र ।
