महात्मा नामदेव महान सन्त थे। इनके माता-पिता के विषय में कुछ भी मालूम नहीं है। खोजों के आधार पर इनको दामोदर नामक व्यक्ति ने भीमा नदी के किनारे पर पड़ा पाया था। उसकी पत्नी गुणबाई ने इनका पालन-पोषण किया था। ये लोग आज से लगभग आठ सौ वर्ष पूर्व गोकुलपुर नामक गाँव में रहते थे।
आठ वर्ष की अवस्था में ही इन्होंने योगाभ्यास प्रारम्भ कर दिया। एक बार इनके माता-पिता कहीं बाहर गए । चलते समय वे कह गए कि बेटा बिना विट्ठलनाथ को खाना खिलाए खाना न खाना। नामदेव थाली परोसकर उनके सामने बैठ गए और कहा जब तक आप खाना न खाओगे, तब तक मैं भी नहीं खाऊँगा। नामदेव की हठ को पूरा करने के लिए विट्ठलनाथ को मनुष्य का रूप धारण करके खाना खाना पड़ा। आने पर माता-पिता को सारा हाल ज्ञात हुआ तो वे बहुत प्रसन्न हुए ।
एक दिन बबूल की डाल को काटते समय इनको ऐसा लगा कि किसी मनुष्य की गर्दन पर कुल्हाड़ी चला रहे हों। इस घटना से दुखी होकर इन्होंने घर छोड़ दिया। एक बार ये चार भक्तों के साथ जा रहे थे। अधिकारियों ने डाकू का गिरोह समझकर गिरफ्तार कर लिया। जब नामदेव राजा के पास पहुँचे, तो इन्होंने उसके (राजा) सामने मरी गाय को जीवित कर दिया। यह चमत्कार देखकर राजा ने इनसे क्षमा माँगी। महाराष्ट्र में आज भी इनका नाम बड़ी श्रद्धा से लिया जाता है। शिक्षा-महान सन्तों के आदर्श से शिक्षा ग्रहण करनी चाहिए।
