हिन्दी अनुवाद- एक समय में, एक राजा था जो एक नदी के किनारे एक महल में रहता था। वह दुखी था क्योंकि उसकी प्रजा के लोग गैर-ज़िम्मेदार थे।

जब भी वह अपने रथ पर बाहर जाता, उसे रास्तों में पत्थर और कचरा पड़ा मिलता। जब भी वह अपनी नाव में जाता, उसे नदी में बहुत गंदी मिलती।

“आह! मेरे लोग इतना गौर-जिम्मेदार क्यों है?” उसक विलाप किया|

“वे रास्तों को साफ़ क्यों नहीं रखते?” उसने कुछ देर सोचा और बोला, “मुझे इन्हें पाठ पढ़ाना ही होगा।” एक रात, वह अपने साथ स्वर्ण मुद्राओं का एक थैला लेकर मुख्य रास्ते पर गया। उसका वज़ीर भी उसके साथ था। उसने रास्ते में एक गड्डा देखा। उसने उसमें स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ रख दीं। तब राजा और वज़ीर ने एक बड़े पत्थर से गड्डा बंद कर दिया।

अगले दिन, एक आदमी अपनी बग्घी में, जिसमें कोयला भरा था, उसी रास्ते से निकला। उसने रास्ते के उस बड़े पत्थर को देखा परन्तु वह उसे लेकर चिन्तित नहीं था। उसने अपनी बग्घी उस पत्थर के साथ से निकाल ली।

फिर एक और आदमी अपनी भेड़ों और बकरियों के झुंड के साथ आया। उस आदमी ने इस पर कोई ध्यान नहीं दिया और अपने झुण्ड को उस पत्थर के साथ से निकालकर दूसरी ओर चला गया।

हिन्दी अनुवाद- बहुत से लोग उसी सड़क से गुजरे । परन्तु सभी इतने गैर-ज़िम्मेदार थे कि उन्होंने उस चट्टान को हटाने का कष्ट नहीं किया। अन्ततः राजा ने अपनी प्रजा के सभी लोगों को बुलाया और कहा, “आओ, इस पत्थर को सड़क से हटाएँ।” लोग चकित रह गए जब उन्होंने इस पत्थर को रास्ते से हटाया और उसके नीचे के गड्ढे में स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ देखीं।

“देखो, पत्थर के नीचे स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ थीं परन्तु किसी ने पत्थर को हटाने का कष्ट नहीं किया। इसलिए कोई भी इन स्वर्ण मुद्राओं के योग्य नहीं है। अगर तुम जिम्मेदार होते और पत्थर हटा देते, तो स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ तुम्हारी होतीं,” राजा ने अपने लोगों को कहा।

राजा ने अपने वज़ीर को आदेश दिया, “इन स्वर्ण मुद्राओं को मेरे महल ले आओ।" इसे सुनने के बाद लोगों को शर्मिन्दगी और ग्लानी महसूस हुई ।
