NCERT Textbooks to Replace CBSE Textbooks

Starting 2018, schools all over the country will use only National Council of Educational Research & Training (NCERT) textbooks. This change will bring about an end to the usage of CBSE textbooks which were used for the CBSE Board curriculum, and limit CBSE to its previous role of conducting examinations and affiliations.

In a recent meeting chaired by the School Education Secretary Anil Swarup where this decision was taken, it was revealed that the Ministry has requested the NCERT to be prepared for this upcoming change. The Board is now expected to expect a higher volume of textbooks from the academic session of 2018, as schools related to the CBSE Board would also be now using the NCERT curriculum.

The NCERT responded with its plan of action, in which they have shown themselves prepared for the higher demand, besides being ready with revisions in the textbooks. The revisions are expected to come in, as the Council is currently reviewing all NCERT textbooks, from standard I to XII, to correct errors in facts and concept. Teachers from all States and Union territories have also been invited to study the books and make suggestions on the presentation of the books, contextually.

After the suggestions have been registered, a plan to bring in subject experts to review the recommendations is in place, so as to update the textbooks, as revealed by an HRD official. The official also added that the Council has been instructed to look into improving the qualitative factor by enhancing the presentation of the textbook matter.
