For the CBSE, ICSE and IB affiliated schools the Maharashtra government has declared that for admission to nursery the minimum age of the child should be 3 years as on July 31 of the academic year in which the admission is sought.
The rule has already been implemented from academic year 2015-16. This rule will also apply for admission to play groups. The rule may be made mandatory for private operators too who operate play groups.
There is also a report which says that in 2018-19 to comply with the rules in the Right to Education Act the government will make standard age of six years as on July 31 for admissions to the first standard. Though this rule has been implemented in Maharashtra but other state governments are expected to follow the rule in due course of time.
Its amazing to see that in such a vast country with one of the highest population the government is not able to make standard rules for nursery admission. Every year lakhs of parents have to search for the latest rules for school admissions. There are court cases which keep on going for the admissions and related rules. The education system and specifically the admission process for toddlers has been politicized and have been made a money making process which has gone beyond control.
