Food for Brain in Exam Time

Foods consumed during exam time can have an effect on your performance of the CBSE exam. With increasing awareness, people have become conscious of nutrition during exam time. In today’s health conscious world, parents and students wish to discover facts about pre-exam nutrition.

Studying, revising and then giving the exam is like a mental marathon which seems to be endless. In this stressful times, healthy eating habits are a must. The right kind of food and drink will make the mind alert, give energy and sustain you through the long exam hours. Similarly eating the wrong types of food would make you sluggish and you lose your concentration levels.

1.      Don’t miss meals: People normally skip breakfast or avoid eating due to nervousness. The brain needs the energy to work efficiently. Thus eating before an exam is of utmost importance. You cannot afford to be tired and not able to write during the exam. If eating food turns you off, try drinking a smoothie or protein shake. It will keep your mind alert and give you physical energy.

2.      Food for mental alertness: Protein-rich food gives a boost to the brain which leads to mental alertness. Eggs, nuts, yogurt and cottage cheese can,  in breakfast on the examination day.  In addition you can have whole-grain whole-grain cereal with low-fat milk, eggs and toast with jam, porridge, oatmeal, or sugar-free muesli.

Other brain foods include fish, walnuts, blueberries, sunflower seeds, flaxseed, dried fruits, figs, and prunes.

Cantaloupes, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, or bananas are fruits considered to be excellent brain fuel. It will make you remember easily and think faster.

Raw carrots, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, spinach, broccoli, and asparagus are good choices among vegetables.

3.      Brain blocking food to be avoided: Though strange to hear but there are foods which require more energy and time to digest. They are called brain blocking foods. They are foods made of white flour, such as cookies, cakes, and muffins. Foods that are high in refined sugar, such as chocolates, desserts, and candies should also be avoided.

Turkey contains L-tryptophan, an essential amino acid which makes you feel sleepy. Thus it should be avoided before the exam. Certain food combinations should be avoided, e.g. protein and starch together. They require additional time when they have to be digested together.

Carbohydrates consumed alone can make you relaxed. It is a good idea to have them on the day before an exam. But avoid on the day of the exam. If you eat carbohydrates such as rice or potato in large quantities, they can make you feel lethargic and sleepy. Foods with high sugar like chocolates, desserts, and candies should be avoided. Instead of stabilizing, they will increase or decrease the sugar content in your body thus making you feel sick.

4.      Beverages to boost your brain:  Drink enough water before and during your exam. You can have tea too, but without a lot of sugar. Dehydration adversely affects your concentration. You c a feel faint and weak. If you drink water when you are thirsty, that means you are already a little dehydrated.

5.      Beverages that block your brain: Alcohol should be completely avoided on the CBSE exam day. Firstly you will not be able to perform well. You will also have a headache or feel nauseous. Drinking should be reduced during exam days to avoid hangovers, dullness, or excessive fatigue.

Sugary sodas and colas should be also avoided. Caffeine can increase your nervousness. If you are in the habit of drinking coffee on an everyday basis then limit your intake to a small cup or two. Complete cut-off can initiate a caffeine-withdrawal headache

6.      Light meals: A big fulfilling meal before an exam will make you drowsy or sleepy. The body's energy would be focussed on digesting the food than to give energy to your brain to make it function efficiently. Eat enough to be satisfied so that you don’t feel hungry during the exam. Eat a salad or a light sandwich.

7.      Avoid trying new foods: Friends and family often recommend a new food, drink or a supplement to consume just before the exam. Everybody is different and you have no idea how your body would react to the new food. You may get an allergy and fall sick. Consume what your body is used to.

8.      Multivitamins: Healthy food takes a backseat when students are preparing for their exams. Many students consume junk food, red bull, coffee etc. Thus there is no supply of essential vitamins and minerals. After consulting a doctor you can start some multi-vitamin. The B vitamins have brain strengthening functions while iron, calcium and zinc boost body’s ability to handle stress.

9.       Healthy snacking: In some countries, students are given five- to ten-minute break in the middle of a long exam. Healthy snacks should be consumed. As protein bars, trail mix, energy bars, granola bars, almonds, walnuts, or fruit are good options. High energy foods like chocolates or sweets should be avoided as they can fluctuate your body sugar.

 

10.   Sleep well: Studying late at night just before the exam is a common practice among students. You should stop studying an evening prior to the exam. Instead, divert your attention. Watch some TV. Eat your dinner with the family. Prepare the clothes for the next day. Pack your bag and sleep early. Whereas on one hand, energy comes from healthy nutrition, on the other hand, you need energy that comes after adequate sleep.
