All about IJSO Exam

The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) tests student’s knowledge of natural science.  It is a collaboration organized regularly between individuals and teams. It aims at boosting the student’s interest in the natural sciences and checking their subject knowledge.

Through this study, students’ capacity to solve problems, logical and critical thinking, and conduct experiments is put to the test. The review is conducted each year in the month of December in various countries. Around 50 countries take this test every year.

International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is a science contest for students who are 15 years old or younger on 31 December of the competition year. The examination designed to address student’s understating of the science and their ability in this field.

How to prepare for IJSO Exam

As mentioned above, the main aim of conducting this examination is to evoke the interest of the students in the natural sciences. Here is a glance at the other goals of organizing national science Olympiads every year:

Exam pattern of IJSO exam

The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is conducted in 5 stages. Below you can check all five stages to know about the IJSO exam.

Stage 1 – NSEJS (National Standard Examination in Junior Science)

NSEJS is the first level of student selection in the Olympiad Junior Science Programme. NSEJS is organized by the Physics Teachers ‘ Association of India (IAPT). Every student who wants to attend successive program stages must register for NSEJS. NSEJS is held at the country’s large number of centers.

Stage – 2 INJSO (Indian National Science Olympiad)

The INJSO is the second stage of IJSO. The INJSO is conducted by the HBCSE (Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education) at 15 centers in our country.

Stage – 3 OCSC (Orientation sum selection Camp in junior science.

OCSC in Junior Science will be conducted by HBCSE for 2-3 weeks. Only students selected from the merit list of Stage II (INJSO) are eligible. There will be no criteria or provisions.

Stage – 4 PDT (Pre-departure Training Camp)

In theory and experiment the selected 6 member student team must undertake a rigorous training program at HBCSE. At HBCSE specific labs are being developed for experimental training purposes. The students will be educated by resource persons from HBCSE and various institutions across the world.

Stage – 5 IJSO (Participation in International Junior Science Olympiad)

12 student’s member teams (two six-member teams) and three teacher leaders will form the delegation to represent India in the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO).

Eligibility criteria of IJSO

As we already know the IJSO exam is conducted in 5 stages so according to stages the eligibility criteria of IJSO is divided into 3 stages. You can check the eligibility criteria of all stages below.

Eligibility criteria for 1st stage (NSEJS)

To qualify for the Stage II INO exam leading to the international Olympiad, an applicant must achieve a score equal to or greater than a Minimum Admissible Score (MAS). For a given subject, the MAS should be 40% of the subject’s maximum score.

Eligibility criteria for 2nd stage (Indian National Science Olympiad)

Students chosen from the Phase I (NSEJS) exam can apply for INJSO. Moreover, those students, who have been exempted from NSEJS as defined on the Enrollment list, are also eligible for INJSO presentation. There is no other means besides these two, by which an applicant is qualified to appear for INJSO.

Eligibility criteria for 3rd stage

Only those students who are selected from the Stage II merit list (INJSO) are eligible. No other requirement or provision will be available.

The camps contain many experimental and theoretical studies. Students are given guidance, especially in studies. The camps end with a valedictory event where the students are invited to speak to distinguished scientists.

OCSC’s merit list in Junior Science will be prepared based on the total theoretical and experimental score aggregated over all the camp assessments, with 60 percent theoretical weight and 40 percent experiment weight. Past stage performance (NSEJS and INJSO) will not be a criterion for OCSC’s list of merits and awards.

The top 6 in the OCSC Junior Science merit list will be named special award-winners. Rs. 5,000 each in the form of books and cash will be granted to those special merit awards. Furthermore, special awards will be eligible to reward meritorious results in theory and experiments.

The 12 Junior Science Special Merit awards selected at the end of the 2013 OCSC will comprise two6-member student teams for the 2013 International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) provided they meet the required requirements such as holding a valid Indian passport, age limit, parental consent, medical fitness, etc.

Systems – Equilibriums,  Scales of nature, Basic concepts about cycles in nature, Ecology, Organisms as systems, Plant physiology, Electric Circuits, Thermodynamically systems, Astrophysical systems.
Development and Evolution –  Strategies of environmental adaptation, Theory of evolution, Cell cycle and cell division, Reproduction in humans, animals and plants, Genes, chromosomes and genetics, Diseases, Mathematics skills – equations involving, plots of functions, basic vector algebra, error estimation, simple statistics, fractions.  
General science skills Explain scientific methods, use scientific terminology, put forward hypotheses, device and accurately describe, adequately represent data in tables, diagrams, and graphs, interpret data.
Laboratory Skills employ basic techniques for measuring the quantities mentioned in part B, work in the laboratory following safety regulations, make observations using the five senses, identify and use basic laboratory equipment

How to prepare for IJSO Exam

Any examination requires proper preparation to achieve the good results. IJSO is the national level exam for this examination preparation you should read these very helpful tips.

  • Since you are also expected to continuously prepare for your school exam while you study for IJSO, proper planning is necessary so that you can practice properly for both the exams.  It is important to be comprehensive with the concepts in order to give mathematics and science Olympiad. Junior Science Olympiad questions are tricky. However, if your definitions are straightforward, you can do well.
  • The easiest way to test your skills and learn how well qualified you are to take free test papers on training for the Olympiad exam. Select as many of these as you can, and periodically solve them. You don’t have to wait before you conclude the whole syllabus before you start answering these IJSO sample questionnaires.
  • Ask them questions about the subjects you covered. While you know the topics by referring to different IJSO study material & IJSO planning guidebooks, it is recommended that you take notes at once. You’d be able to understand more by writing points side by side while you study. Also, these observations will be useful when you sit down to revise Continue revising the chapters frequently as this allows you to memorize the details for a long time and preserve the knowledge.
  • It is a good idea to go out every once in a while for community studies Compare the methods of training with your peers and instill the good ones. During these sessions, it is recommended that you cross-question each other in order to evaluate knowledge. 
  • IJSO syllabus is comprehensive and the questions found in the paper are difficult. However, if you’re consistent with the concepts and have learned properly you will perform well.
