Rumours on CBSE Board Exams for Std VIII Debunked

: It has been announced by the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) earlier this month that, beginning from the school year 2018, mandatory evaluations for students of Standards 5 and 8 are going to be introduced. These have been introduced with an aim to reduce repetitive teaching, and decrease learning by memorization of students, and to identify the subject-wise strengths and weaknesses of individual students. The assessment would be akin to an IQ Test for the children at their own levels, and will be aligned to the new curriculum that has been assigned to schools from pre-school to standard 8.

Unfortunately, when this news was released on the internet, it caused rumours to be floated on social media platforms. Watsapp was flooded with false claims that the CBSE Board examinations were now to be conducted for students from Class 8, beginning 2018. This had worried parents and students alike rushing to contact board officials to verify the news.

The Board has not made any official statement on CBSE Board examinations for students of Class 8. The news that is afloat on social media channels is a false news, created for mischief. The Chief Executive and Secretary for CISCE, Mr Gerry Arathoo, clarified that the official statement released by CISCE talked only about the monitoring of students’ progression against the set methods of education. This is planned in a fixed format, by assessing students of Standard 5 and 8, in four subjects. This statement is in no way linked to the rumours about CBSE Board examinations for Class 8.

Expanding more on the assessment that will be carried out for the students of Standard 5 and 8, the CISCE Chief stressed that the tests would be on four subjects, namely English, Mathematics, Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and Social Studies (Civics, History, Geography). The examinations would be of a written format, and would test the students on their understanding of the set curriculum, their intelligence, and on their life skills. The Chief also stated that the new curriculum was being designed with an aim to adhere to the best global practices. This would also help to assess the on-going learning levels of the students studying with CISCE affiliated schools.
