1. Bhagat Singh, the great freedom fighter, was only 23 when in 1931 he was hanged in the Lahore jail for having thrown a bomb in the Legislative Assembly Hall in Delhi on April 8, 1929. He devoted his life to the great task of first making India free from the British rule and then building India into a strong nation. Bhagat Singh dreamt of an India where there would be respect for every religion and where all Indians would get the basic necessities of life.

2. Bhagat Singh was born in 1907 in a well-to-do Sikh family of Punjab full of love for the country. As a child, his ideal was his uncle Ajit Singh, who was a great freedom fighter.

3. Two incidents played a major role in shaping Bhagat Singh’s life. In Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, many people were killed by firing at the orders of General Dyer. Bhagat Singh ran away from school to visit the site. He was greatly disturbed by the bullet marks in the walls of the Jallianwala Bagh. He brought back with him some blood-soaked mud in a little bottle to remind him of British cruelty.

4. The second incident was Lala Lajpat Rai’s death in 1928. Lala Lajpat Rai was also Bhagat Singh’s ideal. He was leading a protest march when he was beaten up with lathis, and he died soon after. Bhagat Singh felt very angry and decided to throw a bomb. Bhagat Singh and his friends did not try to run away after throwing the bomb. They were arrested. 2.They were good friends, and every evening they would sit together in a forest to discuss the events of the day, exchange advice, and make good promises. The rabbit was the wisest of the four. He believed that men and women were superior, and was always telling his friends stories of human goodness and wisdom.

3.One evening, when the moon rose in the sky and the rabbit looked at it carefully and said, “Tomorrow good men will observe a fast. They will eat no food before sunset, and during the day they will give money or food to any beggar or holy man who may meet them. Let us promise to observe a fast like them.”

4.The others agreed, and then went their different ways.

5.Next day, the otter got up, stretched himself, and was preparing to get his breakfast when he remembered the promise he had taken with his friends.

6.“If I keep my promise, how hungry I shall be by evening!” he thought. “I’d better make sure that there’s plenty to eat once the fast is over.” He set off towards the river. A fisherman had caught several large fish early that morning, and had buried them in the sand, planning to return for them later. The otter soon smelt them out.

7.“A dinner all ready for me,” he said to himself. “But since it’s a holy day, I mustn’t steal.” Instead he called out, “Does anyone own this fish?”
