Tobacco control chapter need to be added in schools syllabus

In order to have control over the intimidation situations of tobacco in India, The State Tobacco Control Cell of the Delhi government has brought to the notification of The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to include a chapter on this in the CBSE school syllabus. Since past two years, the issue is been asked to the NCERT a few times by the department to include the chapter in the academic career for understudies of Classes VI to XII which includes, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

As per the information, it is estimated that 14.1% of school children under the age of 15 are using tobacco products. Among them, 4.2% are using cigarettes and 1.9% of the students are using other tobacco products. The usage of chewable tobacco has also been increased during recent days even though they are completely banned in Delhi.

Estimation of WHO

World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that 500 of 1,000 youngsters who are smoking will gradually lose their lives due to the diseases caused by tobacco. All over the world before the age of 18 years, people start experiencing tobacco usage. Because some of the people find it the best environment to start using tobacco.

S.K. Arora, Additional Director (Health), Tobacco Control Department, said 'In order to handle the situations regarding tobacco usage we have already started implementing tobacco-free educational institute initiatives as per the central government notifications. And we have also considered the legal provision of the Cigarette and other Tobacco Products Act 2003 [COTPA] and Delhi Act, 1996. Nevertheless, this has become the huge problem that mostly influences school going children. And hence it is very much important that students, teachers as well as parents should take necessary action regarding tobacco usage by creating a chapter in academic sessions will help them to some extent'.

He further added that based on the reply from the NCERT this issue will come to an end. And it will be considered before the CBSE syllabus and textbook development proceed it from the next session onwards.

The CBSE board is readily to include one chapter based on tobacco control but it is now the responsibility of NCERT to grant permission for it.
