It's time for an SOP to find such children and teachers to guide them

There are many students who are still struggling with some kind of learning disabilities and are most commonly known as children with special needs (CWSN). These type of children are tagged as anxious and naughty by their teachers and do not get any sort of attention.  Under this category the physically and mentally challenged children, including the slow learners or the children with learning disabilities are regarded as CWSN. And it is now time for things to get changed in the classroom.

Central Board of Secondary Education has appointed a team specially to safeguard the CWSN. The committee acknowledges to provide complete care and fulfill the requirement of such children. The board has received many inputs from the city-based schools and instructors. In order to spot the children with learning disabilities and supply them needed steering or teachers to assist them the CBSE board felt the necessity of standard operating procedure  (SOP).

The CBSE board is completely focused on the policy based on the inclusive education of the children with disabilities. Besides the policy, the board is also taking responsibility to prepare an examination policy and to provide guidelines for the children who are slow learners. The Ministry of Human Resource Development took an initiative by conducting the workshop recently in Delhi that will help in providing development strategies and also help for the betterment of children with special needs.

In the workshop different NGO organizations, State government officials as well as other people involving in this field were invited and ways were considered as the part of identifying the children with special needs. During the meeting, people came up with different issues which also include the difficulty to identify children with special needs and the difficulties in obtaining a disability certificate since they are only a few well-trained psychiatrist who can know the ability of the children and provide them with the certification. Some people also mentioned that it would not be appropriate to mingle CWSN with other students.

A point was raised by Sangeeta Saksena, co-founder of NGO Enfold Proactive Health Trust, saying that there should be “Personal Safety and Sexuality Etiquette Education” added to the educational standards. The students studying between class 1 to 12 and for students pursuing B.Ed and some special academic courses ought to add this as a section of the syllabus. Since, children with special needs are mostly affected by sexual abuse because they cannot do respond quickly to the circumstances. She has raised up an organization called “Suvidha kit” which takes care of children with intellectual organic process delay.

Another person Dakshayini Kanna, principal, Harvest International School, also took the initiative of saying that they are informed to give limited admissions for children with special needs. This is completely based on the facilities like infrastructure, counselors and special teachers to handle CWSN. And it is mandatory for all the teachers belonging to the affiliated schools to take care of the such children by knowing how to tackle with them. She also said that there is the urge to know about the chances of arranging online tutors to train the teachers to handle such kind of children. Based on all these issues there is a level of expectation that the slow learners and CWSN can cope up easily.

M. Srinivasan, president, Management of Independent CBSE Schools Association in Karnataka, also claimed that there is the need for every school to have well-trained teachers, so that they can help children and improve their level. The teachers and trainers should also have minimum training knowledge to handle children with special needs. Awareness programs should be organized to make everybody know about the issue and make sure that people should be acknowledged with the information on how to handle CWSN, Manju Sharma, principal, Delhi Public School said that they have organized an awareness program for teachers. And the teachers are also informed to know how to identify children with special needs and train them.
