Plan Your School Day

A school day is difficult to plan. There are so many things to fit into in a single day that is becomes tough to be able to have fun, and do your revision. Besides, long-term school projects, tuitions and whole-day school hours allow for very little time for the students.

However, parents should help their children get organized, and teach them time management. This is a skill that will not only help them now, but also make for very responsible adults. When a student learns to divide their time between work and play as a child, they will be able to lead successful lives as working adults, leaving time for their own selves outside of work too.

Sit with your children and teach them how to come up with a plan, and discipline them to stick to the plan. As a parent, look over the plan to make sure that it is doable. It should not happen that the child has allotted a time of only 10 minutes for homework, and two hours for play.

Set up Homework Slots – Looks up your school timetable and your weekly extra-curricular activities to estimate how much time you have available each day for homework. On days when you have swimming lessons, you might give only an hour for homework. On days when you have no other activities planned, you might give two hours. If you have a function or outing on a particular day, keep no homework time for that day, and double it the previous, or next day.

Use your Mornings – If a  CBSE student is an early-riser, do not let the morning go to waste. Usually, schools begin at 8am. If the student is able to wake up at 6am, then do use the two hours in between for study or homework. This will leave more time for other activities in the evening.

Travel Time – Students typically spend a half hour in the school bus. Let them use this time to be slotted under ‘play’. Using this time to study will not only put a pressure on them, but also make them distracted to hear other students enjoying themselves around them. This is usually either the beginning or the end of the day, and the students are upbeat here. Do not force that energy on studying.

Use Friday Evenings – Completing your weekend CBSE homework on a Friday evening will leave you free for the rest of the weekend. Unless you have specific plans to go out with your friends, do keep a slot for homework and study on Fridays. This will give you a homework- and stress-free weekend!

Stick to your Timetable – Making a timetable is the easy part. Sticking to it is what is difficult! Learn to stick to your own discipline. The parents of a student can enforce discipline only up to a certain level. Beyond that, it is the responsibility of the student to manage their time and complete their revision and homework.

Do remember that timetables change every few weeks. You might have new extracurricular activities to work on, or exams upcoming soon, for which you would need to draw up a tighter schedule for study. It is all in the hands of the student in the end!
