Percentile based admission leaves students and colleges underwhelmed

The decision to adopt the percentile formula instead of a percentage while admitting students into various courses has left many students and their parents in a fix.  While the admission frenzy was at its peak this time last year, there seems to be a lull this year, especially for the CBSE crowd. For the layman, the percentile formula calculates your position amongst the number of exam takers. This means that even though you secure a higher percentage but the number of students who appeared for the exam is lesser than another board, your ranking automatically is lower.

CBSE Board seems to have taken the biggest hit and the number of students applying to colleges has vastly diminished. Students are nervous to even apply to popular courses for the fear of not having qualified and are turning to private colleges instead for hope.

A CBSE student’s parent commented on the situation, “My son is a topper if you look at his percentage but his percentile is 87.21 which is not enough to qualify the merit list of the colleges he’s seeking admission in”.

Not only students, several colleges are alarmed at the fewer number of CBSE students seeking admission to their most preferred courses like B.Com & BA compared to past years. They’re afraid this change is going to adversely affect the comprehensive schooling.

It’s safe to say that should this trend continue, it will either result in low self-confidence in students or in their academics taking a hit.
