Next round of NCERT’s National Achievement Survey (NAS) scheduled in September

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is an autonomous organisation set up by the Government of India to assist and advise the Central and State Governments on policies and programmes for qualitative improvement in school education. National Achievement Survey (NAS) has been conducted by NCERT with an objective of finding out the current situation of the education system in schools.

Generally, only a few districts from each state were used to participate in this survey but for the first time every district will be represented and considered as a ‘unit'  in the next round of the National Achievement Survey (NAS) which will be held in September.

NAS is not just a typical NCERT school examination but it is a research done by NCERT to judge the health, flaws of the education system for finding solutions to improve the overall education system. This research is based on student's learning. A randomly picked sample of students representing each of the districts from class 3, 5 and 8 are asked to take the test and based on their understanding and learning conclusions are framed.

The previous NAS findings are in compliances with the Assessment Survey Evaluation Reports of NGOs where it emerged that students of higher classes were not able to solve the lower class level questions. Few were not able to read as well.

Yajnamurthy Sreekanth, Principal, Regional Institute of Education, Mysore (RIEM), which is a constituent of the NCERT, has talked with the press recently. “The results of the survey will help in improving the outcome of learning and will have a positive impact on country's performance international testing such as the ‘Programme for International Students' Assessment' where India had performed poorly in 2009," said Mr Sreekanth.

He also added that In terms of quality, the southern region is ahead of other regions when it comes to enrolment, retention and students’ achievement but still the result varies within the regions. He also put a thought that “We need to identify poor performing areas and undertake measures to enhance the quality of education in collaboration with States”.

The RIEM will be conducting a three-day workshop at the Institute from July 10 with a motto to support the states in developing curricular competencies.
