NCERT Invites Teachers to Review Textbooks

As part of a regular initiative, the National Council for Educational Research & Training (NCERT) is reviewing its current textbooks, and has invited teachers from across the state to contribute their ideas.

The Council has extended this request as it requires the teachers to study and point out factual and contextual errors in the existing textbooks, and to contribute novel ideas on presentation of the textual matter to be updated into the books.

The Council has stated that they are currently in the process of reviewing the textbooks for all Standards from 1^st to 12^th, and for this major activity, has invited the teachers from all the states and Union Territories of India. The proposals that are invited are classified under two forms - of correcting (if any) factual errors in the existing matter in the textbooks, and improving the overall presentation of the books conceptually.

The deadline for these suggestions is June 30, during and post which, the Boards will review the textbooks.

The process of reviewing its textbooks is undertaken every few years by the NCERT, in a move to incorporate into the books all new theories and concepts. The Central Government has been working on making the NCERT textbooks a mandatory book at all school, instead of books published by private publishers as used by various Boards.

This move however, has been resisted by the private publishers, who have declared in an undertaking to the schools that they refuse to publish ‘objectionable’ content in their books.
