How to score better in Business Studies Paper

The dreaded and most talked about the time of the year has arrived: the CBSE Class 12th Board Exams!! This year, a whopping number of 14, 99,122 students (4, 46,641 girls and 6, 21,259 boys) have registered themselves for the exam.

Beginning on 1st March with English as the first paper, it is now time for the students to appear for their Business Studies paper scheduled on 3rd March.

Touted as one of the most scoring subjects for Commerce students, Business Studies can be easily used to scale the ever increasing marks ladder. The ingredients of proper planning, time management and clarity of theoretical concepts combined in the right proportion are the formula to make this paper a cakewalk for students. Although the subject might seem dull at times, the trick here is to compare the theoretical concepts with practical, real life situations to break the monotony. The theories learnt in this paper will form the foundation of all the future entrepreneurs and businessmen of the country.

Decoding the Paper – Getting an idea about the Pattern:

With the duration of the paper being 3 hours, there shall be a total of around 25 questions. The pattern goes as follows:

  • 8 questions of 1 mark each (One word to one sentence)
  • 5 questions of 3 marks each (50 – 75 words)
  • 6 questions of 4 marks each (150 words)
  • 3 questions of 5 marks each (150 words)
  • 3 questions of 6 marks each (200 words)

Here are some simple tips and tricks to ace the paper:

  1. Admission Card: Double, or rather, triple check this point each day before you leave for the examination hall. What happens if you forget? You will not be allowed to sit for the exam and all your hard work goes down the drain.
  2. Read: Utilize the 15 minutes of time allotted prior to the commencement of the exam to read the question paper from beginning till end. Use this time to also organize your thoughts as per the marks allotted to each question.
  3. Write the Best Answer: Your answers should impress the examiner from the word go! The secret behind this is to write to-the-point answers as per the marks allotted. Remember that writing unnecessarily lengthy answers will only distract the examiner, and might make them skip the important content.
  4. Correct Sequence in a Process – Pay careful attention to the question. If the answer demands writing about a process, ensure the correct sequence is followed. Changing the sequence in a process based question might alter the entire meaning altogether.
  5. Quote Examples: The importance of examples cannot be emphasized enough. And, you do not have to be bookish. Quote live examples, if possible. Using your creativity can be the secret to scoring an extra point.
  6. Time Management: Divide your time cleverly amongst all questions. Do not spend too much time on one question. In case you are having trouble answering a specific question, come back to it later.

Another crucial tip related to time management is to not attempt the same question twice. Marks allocated in the first attempt will be counted; the second attempt shall be ignored.

  1. Illustrations: Only words will not add substance to your answers. Add diagrams, tables, process charts to illustrate your answers. For example, “distinguishing” or “differentiating” answers between two concepts should always be written in a tabular format. Other examples include scalar chain, communication network etc.
  2. Revision: Always leave some time for revision towards the end. This is crucial to fish out errors and make some last minute corrections.

The most important mantra here is to maintain your calm, in the CBSE examination hall and outside it. Maintain a safe distance from stress, and go give that paper your best shot. Success awaits you!!
