Free our children from burden of books

Have you noticed small children struggling to carry their school bags filled with books? Do you know what happens to our children when they lift the Weight that is half their weight every day?

In the name of education, we are punishing our children and there by spoiling their childhood and physical development. This is a truth many educated parents know about and we are yet to address this major problem happening right In front of our eyes.

Children carrying heavy school bags can damage themselves physically, there are reports which show the school children below 10 years are suffering from orthopaedic problems. These children can be victims of medical conditions like back aches, neck pain deformed skeletons, and also lung problems. If a child carries more than 15 per cent of their body weight it can alter the angle of shoulders, neck and lower limb which can lead to deformation of overall posture.

There are study reports from India medical association which says heavy bags can affect the overall growth of skeletal system among children which occurs during puberty and also points out that children who carry school bags with a weight more than 10 percent can be found to have poor lung function also.

We have seen many NGOs who took this problem seriously and demanding HRD ministry to frame a policy for reducing the weight of school bags. A campaign called "save my back" was conducted by a famous NGO which got support from 3000 netizens is now taking this problem to another level, they are aiming to reach their voices to reach Delhi.

Meanwhile, Delhi high court had addressed this problem in January 2012 and asked schools to reduce bag weight to not exceed 10 percent of child's body weight. The Ashok Ganguly committee, on the other hand, suggested that there shouldn't be any books for preschool classes and the kids need only to carry their lunch box and play materials with them.

India is the only place we can see school children carrying books in their bags every day to school. In foreign countries there are no such practices, every school children are allocated with their own lockers to keep their study materials in the school itself. This can also be practiced here also,

we must understand that we are living in a technology world and with the right technology we can make better education systems e-books and I-pads can help decrease the Weight of books and make learning more fun and enjoyable. Countries like U.S and Australia are providing such facilities where homework and notes can be sent and received online. Implementing such facilities in India can be a big favour to our suffering children.

To solve this problem CBSE in 2004 came up with some guidelines which says, the Weight of bags carried by class 1 and 2 must not weigh more than 2 kg, for class 3 and 4 bag weight must be up to 3 kg, class 5 to 8 need not carry more 4 Kg and for 9 to 12 the limit is 6 Kg but unfortunately it remained in the paper itself.

It's time to take steps towards this problem by implementing technology enabled e-learning or proposing some proper plans to save our future generations from this problems. Let's make learning a fun activity and save childhood
